Riding the Waves of Parenthood

Whether we are parenting our first teen or feel well-seasoned with experience, we are all trying to surf the waves of adolescence. You may be a natural surfer with innate skill and a feel for the ocean, rely on instructors or friends to teach you how, or prefer to read and watch videos to learn on your own. As parents, we are always learning and our kids are our best teachers.

We thought our first monthly theme would be “Understanding Our Teens” with a focus on The Teen Brain and Teen Stress & Anxiety.

We have stumbled across a couple thought-provoking websites and articles that we wish we had a while back... As you peruse the Parent Toolkit, please notice it’s not just geared for teens. There is a tab that is grade specific, and tools geared for your developmental stage, PreK-12th grade (love the growth charts!). And work your way over to the page with dialogue suggestions, perfect for the moments you are speechless, and needing a little patience and encouragement in the form of a script. Please enjoy and pass along the information to friends, teachers or anyone you think would benefit.

There has been an explosion of brain research in the last five years. Given how technology and social media are shaping and affecting our teens’ intellectual, social, emotional and physical development, we have found a wealth of resources on the teen brain. The following article from Mindful is a great start. The visual for understanding the teen dilemma provided us with an “aha” moment and greater empathy for the challenges our teens face. While we may have struggled to find the right balance between sleep, studying and having a social life, we did not have as many competing distractions. Also, at the end of the article, there are fabulous book recommendations.

What’s Going on inside the teen brain?

We are very excited to navigate the journey or ride the waves with you!
